"Changing the World" published by Poetry.com in "Rhyme And Reason" [pg. 151]

"Changing the World" by Jim Griminger
Today's the day that everything changes,
From Timbuktu to the Texas ranges,
Let's get together and fix the dangers,
We're all humans--none of us are strangers,
Colors and skins and race should not matter,
Any other thoughts--be mindless chatter,
The days of war and strife should be done with,
"Together" should no longer be a myth,
We must band together to reach the stars,
Lest we divide--our end: alien's jars,
We should give up our pride and our egos,
Can we work as friends please--mi amigos?
Is uniqueness so wrong and change so bad?
Why can't forgiveness become a new fad?
Let's quit wasting our energy and time,
Let's turn this world into something sublime,
Happiness and freedom for all of us,
Should be our goals 'fore we return to dust,
Let go of your anger and hate and your fear,
It's time we make "us" ones all will endear!

"The Angry Fire (An Ode to Edgar Allan Poe)" by Jim Griminger
I sat with the poker aimed at the fire,
And there I contemplated my funeral pyre,
Would the flames be angry enough to devour?
Or waste away like every winters' flower?
Could the dread that I felt be so true?
Or was this a just a trick of being blue?
Suddenly an ember exploded and screamed,
Much like the death of any who have dreamed,
I sat and I pondered just how far to go,
And wondered at the point of cold without snow,
Was my vision a testament of things to come?
Was this all that I would ever dare to become?
My anger came swift and swelled as if with pride,
Calmness was gone no matter how hard I tried,
I peered ever closer to fire raging at my face,
My veins began to bulge and my pulse, it did race,
So I took that metal poker and "slayed" the largest ember,
It was a mighty blow, the best that I can remember,
My murderous weapon could no longer be stayed,
The other embers shook, for they knew they would pay,
I crushed each one until it lost it's angry burn,
The very last one had lost the will to be stern,
It crumbled before I touched it and fell in disarray,
So I turned my back to it and slowly walked away,
Then what a sensation it was that I did feel,
For the tiniest ember of all was in my shoe at my heel,
It's last act of defiance had left on me a scar,
Next time I think I'll just enjoy the fire from afar!
