Bonus #3: How to "bust" a myth:

Have you ever received the "Neiman Marcus Cookie" e-mail or the "Disney Promises Free Prizes" e-mail?  Or how about that one about one Mr. Jim Neugent complaining to ABC about a certain "pro-gay" episode of The Practice?

Well here's a little information to help you decipher whether or not what you're reading is the truth or just another attempt at someone hoping that enough people will forward the e-mail that it will come back to them or one of their friends.

Why would they want it to come back? Because it will most likely be loaded with a bunch of valid "forwarded" addresses which they turn into a "package" of valid e-mail addresses and sell to the top-paying spammers (didn't know it was that simple for them to "farm" the info, did ya?) for a HUGE profit.  They can also use all those addresses as "referrals" when they enter online contests who offer to enhance their chances of winning with every valid e-mail address that they enter.

As simple as it is for them to "farm" your information, there's an easy way to "screw 'em" as it were: when you forward something, put your own e-mail address in the "To" address bar, and anyone you want to forward it to in the "Bcc" address bar, NOT the "Cc" address bar.  Cc stands for "Carbon-copy", Bcc stands for "Blank carbon-copy".  By putting your own e-mail address in the "To" bar, you will effectively "kill the link" from all the forwards.

While it also means you will once again receive the e-mail, at least this time you'll know that you've killed the link and spared whoever you passed it on to from that same fate.  You could take it a step further by erasing everything but the "heart" of the e-mail when you forward it.  Leave only the "story" or "joke" or "inspirational saying" and delete everything else, from other "forward" e-mails to those pesky ">" characters.  You'll also reduce the size of the e-mail by doing this and keep from becoming a burden on someone with limited e-mail file space.  And never, under any circumstance, forward a chain-e-mail unless you want the people you forward it to hating your guts and "blocking" any further correspondence from you.  There is no way for someone else to track how many times you forward a certain e-mail, let alone in a certain amount of time!  The only thing your accomplishing is assisting a spammer!

Finally, if you want to check the validity of the e-mail, check out the following links to find out if it's true or just a myth!

Urban Legend.com: http://www.urbanlegend.com

Discovery Channel's Myth-Busters: http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythbusters/mythbusters.html

Now get out there and show your e-mail who's boss!  Use what you've learned here to help put a serious dent in the art of spamming!

Inspiration and well-being to you all (unless you're a spammer!)

Re: [Creativegarh Writer's Block] Green Friend J

Then the tree said to me in a very deep, slow voice, "Why dream of other places when you have not even discovered everything here? What of the civilization under my roots of many different living things? They all have stories to tell and feelings to be felt. Is this not enough intrigue to keep you here? And what of the creatures in the sky who bed down in me every night? The wonders they have seen and adventures they have lived would fill so many books that no building could store them, though I'm sure you humans would try. And what of me and the things I've seen since I was planted? The stories I could tell would surely spread further than my foliage and outnumber my leaves. But if you must leave this world with your mind, I ask a simple thing. Remember where you came from and what you're leaving behind!"

[Writer's Block] Poetic improvisation

Just thought I'd give this a try, here. I have 48 minutes left on my time here at the library's computer, and, in honor of some of Jia's work, would like to come up with a poem off the top of my head within this time limit, so here goes:

Smoke Recall

A lighter flashes,
Bright burnt flame,
Cigarette ignites,
Burning insane,
Smoke bellows,
Lungs start to heave,
Fingers tremble,
Input: nicotine,
Craving ceases,
Brain waves settle,
Calmness returns,
Smoke again mettles,
Night is so black,
Rain is so cold,
Little flame of light,
Makes me feel bold,
A time recalled,
Alive once again,
Memory returned,
As sight grows dim.

OK, there it is. Came to me pretty quick, actually. Took less than 10 minutes.  All reviews/critiques welcome.

Thanks,
-j5265 (Jim)

[Creativegarh Profiles] Aloha fellow creators!

What a cool group! I'm supposed to be doing some marketing, but after stopping in here, I couldn't help but feel like I had come across kindred spirits!
Great health and wealth to you all!
I like to think of myself as a creative person. I have written lyrics since I was 13 years old (I am now 34) and I have had a poem published at poetry.com ("Changing The World" by Jim Griminger) and I would like to someday write a science-fiction novel for the Star Wars or Star Trek sagas. (Any tips on where to begin?)
I think it is wonderful that this group has such an international flavor.  Hopefully the more we learn about one another, the more tolerance we learn and
the closer we grow. Imagine what we could do if all the time, money, power and energy we waste on battling one another were used for creative purposes instead!
By the way, I am a HUGE Pink Floyd fan and definitely count David Gilmour as one of my biggest influences (yes, I play guitar). If you are a fan of slightly
harder rock, I also recommend Queensryche. In my mind, they are a Heavy Metal version of Pink Floyd, especially their first four albums.
Anyway, come see some of my creativity at my unique web portal: j5265.com Enterprises (www.j5265.com).

Re: Belated Birthday Wishes, Jim!

Aloha Ank!

Thanks for the Belated Birthday Wishes -it was a good day! Though it is a day marred with untimely losses, it is also a wonderful reminder of what we, as human(s), are capable of. I am still astonished when I think of all the compassion that was shown around the world on that day. For this reason I now consider myself blessed to share my day of birth with that chapter in history.
I hardly consider enjoying each precious moment "weird". It is those who fail to do this that I find somewhat odd. :)
I've been feeling the "poetry" muse again, and I need to check for any other poems with this possible title first, but right now I am leaning towards the title: "A September to Remember".
As far as the SW novel goes, yes, I am sure it will be a long, arduous journey, but I am hoping to find a possible "sponsor" that could help me out financially.
I'm also going to research some grant info. I think the research could become a temporary full-time job with all the resources to be checked and verified.  Also, as you mentioned, getting all the permissions will be no easy task.

That reminds me, has anyone on this board ever heard of "Huntsman" (huntsmans@b...)? I've tried this e-mail to no avail. He once critiqued some work of mine with some great suggestions. I would like to get his opinion on my idea for this novel.
Thanks for the sales pitch! Indeed, good luck to all of us! I am currently thinking of going to some of my local malls and shopping strip shops to see who's hiring for the upcoming holiday season here in America. I think 2 of these low-salary jobs should be equivalent to the 1 that I used to have. I'll be short on free time, but that just means I'll spend less! :)
I understand being "spooky". I've been known to "freak out" people myself. *sigh* :)

"If you lost your copy of "Believe" (? –Empire?) why don't you just download Kazaalite or
something and download the album?" -because that whole file-swapping mess going on here in America right now is actually fining people. One lady in Maryland (I think) got fined $1000's of dollars because of all the songs her kids downloaded!

For a while, Queensryche was my favorite band. I can't really say I have a favorite anymore, and I actually listen to much more classical and new age these
days. Nonetheless, every once in a while I still get that urge for something heavy, and nothing quite fits the bill like Queensryche! Their Empire CD is another one I forgot to mention. Check out the title song "Empire", "Jet City Woman" and "Best I Can". This was the album with their smash hit "Silent Lucidity" which is all about "dream-scaping" -controlling your dreams.
Speaking of dreams, has anyone ever "flown" in a dream -without the help of an airplane or other flying device? Just like Superman - flying by your own power.
I did, once, and it was very exhilarating to wake up and remember doing it!
Looking forward to the "sharing of thoughts", my friend.

Until then,
Aloha

Re: [Creativegarh Writer's Block] 22nd August [message 5814]

Hello, Jia

I agree with Silva, this sounds like a lonely soul. I can only say one thing to lonely souls: "Love thyself. For no one is perfect, and no one can expect perfection. Someone you can't please is not worth pleasing."
OK, here we go with the comments:
Overall, I think it has an interesting structure, and it definitely painted a vivid picture in my mind of a young woman smoking a cigarette early in the morning (or late at night, as the 25th cigarette incurs). I also like the twist of putting what should be the opening line at the end instead. I liked it. I do have 2 questions, though.
Was the date "22nd AUGUST" the title of the poem?
The single-word line "almost" -does it refer to "almost" 25 cigarettes or something else?
Let's see more, Jia, and I will post some of my older works for YOU to critique!

Sincerely,
j5265

Re: Learning to Fly

Dirk,

Regarding your last dream of flight: Ending in a dead-end street. Perhaps your mind could think of no other place to fly to. If the details aren't there, your mind will draw a blank. Or perhaps your mind had simply accomplished what it set out to do. If you would like to get back into a dream of flight, try this (goes for all who are attempting returns to previous dreams): Think heavily on the dream you would like to re-enter just before falling asleep. Imagine yourself "spinning" back into it, and tell your mind that awareness of the dream will not awake you unless you are ready to come out. This exercise has worked for me before, but my mind is often too cluttered to properly execute. Thus, my single experience because I really would like to "fly" again.
Jia, regarding your dreams, I'm curious. Do you want to get over your fear of heights? If so, this may explain the "jumping". Your mind is attempting to overcome the hurdle without risking a fall. If you can dream in this manner again, try letting go of your fear (imagine it as a piece of cloth that you can let go of) and remind yourself that it is only a dream. Hopefully, this will help you break through the barrier.
Manoj, your insights, as always are compelling. I will explain my dream of flight in a future post and would like your input.
And of course, Ank, your thoroughness is inspiring. I think I will come to you if I ever have a research project! :)
Well, that's it for now, my 1 hour here at the library is almost up! I am continuing to attempt to catch up with all the posts I've missed.

Inspiration and Peace to you all!

Speaking of star-gazing... [Vikram message #6482]

...I saw my 1st "Texas" meteor this past Wednesday morning. My
step-brother/wife invited me over for some backyard star-gazing (they work the night shift too) and I saw a nice trail. Wasn't best I've seen (that would be in Ohio last vacation on older sister's back porch!).

Anyway, my step-brother than broke out his telescope and zoomed in on Saturn

You know, it's one thing to see Saturn in pictures and print, or even TV, but to behold it first-hand like that was nothing short of thrilling and awe-inspiring. To actually see the rings and make out the roundness of the planet, to watch it move across your field of vision from the telescope until you finally have to re- adjust the angle and to agonize over every second of viewing time that the process steals, is to know the true meaning of awe and wonder!

I think that it is now my 2nd-favorite memory behind my vacation in 1998 to Hawaii

I urge everyone else to get out and get inspired by our universe! Indeed, the more you realize everything that had to occur for us to have reached a point of creation, the more you can't help but think that we were getting a hand from somewhere!

Some tips: lying down and looking up is easiest on your neck and back, so take a blanket! You'll probably want a jacket unless it's still warm late at night where you are! Don't forget mosquito repellant! If you can't get any, keep your skin covered and avoid perfumes and colognes! Binoculars are great for checking out the moon whenever possible!  Finally, get as large of "slice" of sky in your viewing area as possible, blink as little as possible >:) and be patient!

Inspiration and well-being to you all!

Re: Aloha fellow creators!

I'm happy to hear that things are as good as it gets with you and hope it continues.
No need to worry about being sued. I'm trying to spread the word, not stifle it. :)
Actually, I'm quite honored that someone took the time and effort to see my work. I appreciate it very much.
As far as my idea for the Star Wars novel, it would be based on some characters that were introduced in previous novels. I just feel like some interesting characters weren't fully explored, and a few of the endings I've read just seemed a little weak in my humble estimation.
Hmmm... "Vogon poetry" -consider my curiosity peaked!
It may be a while before I get a copy of "Hitchiker...", though, as I am currently out of work and desperately in need of a job! My internet business isn't exactly working out (I just don't have the marketing budget) and I'm about to lose my car and my home, but I have faith that a solution will show itself soon. :)
I'm glad you enjoyed Queensryche. You picked 2 of their best albums in `Believe' (? –Empire?) and `Operation Mindcrime'. Unfortunately I've lost my copy of `Believe' (? –Empire?), but on `...Mindcrime' I highly suggest listening to the entire album as it is a fictional story of a young man who is tired of the status quo and is looking for something to believe in. He finds this "network" and begins working for them hoping to make a difference, only to end up getting hooked on drugs and realizing that what he is doing is wrong. It is the story of his inner struggles for faith and something to believe in, not to mention a woman ([Suite Sister] Mary) that he meets only to find out she's part of the syndicate as well. Actually, "Suite Sister Mary" is one song I do recommend as the emotions felt in the 2 voices (Lead singer Geoff Tate's and Pamela Moore's as Mary) are quite convincing. `I Don't Believe In Love' tends to speak to me, but that's another story for another time! If you can, try to find their albums "Rage For Order" and "The Warning" as the musical content on these 2 is multi-layered and really show off Mr. Tate's vocal capabilities!

Well, here's the complete re-direct url for my site:

Re: sex in advertising

Ketan,

I could not agree with you more. Unfortunately the mainstream part of America is all about image, which is due to the fact that most people are looking for that fast buck (dollar), and end up giving marketing far more power than it deserves. I think that is why most elders are seen as conservative, they have been through the hype and understand that it is just that, hype.

One needs to look no further than some of our most popular "now" items such as rap music and/or pop music such as N'Sync, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and so on (I personally consider this "bubble-gum" music). It was very obvious at the opening of this year's NFL televised games where Britney Spears and Aerosmith played at the same gig. The audience reaction to Britney Spears was non-committal, at best, whereas Aerosmith received a raucous ovation. No doubt, this was an older audience who enjoyed the true talent of a band such as Aerosmith where there is true talent with the playing of musical instruments versus the "kaoroke", if you will, of Britney Spears

The same holds true for rap. I'm sorry, but if you want me to be impressed, you're going to have to do something that I don't think I could do, even with training and sponsorship.

Of course, in the end, I believe "musicians" such as Britney Spears will
eventually disappear, while Aerosmith will always get radio play somewhere.

[Side note: recent study showed people stayed longer/ate more food with
classical music playing vs. Britney Spears music which often made them end their meal abruptly!]

For eventually, people realize something good or made with talent is far more pleasing than something revolving around hype and circumstance. I mean, eventually, every audience "grows up".

As for sex in advertising, again I see the "bubble-gum" musicians and rappers (using their thug language about sex) being part of what is wrong with America.  I was personally appalled by Christina's video (I forgot the name of the song) where she "dances" in a boxing ring, especially considering her core audience (young teenage girls). This is not what I want my nieces seeing as a role model.

We have many good things here, but the blast from the hype of our "crap" drowns it out. I can think of no better example than Johnny "The Man In Black" Cash. If you really want to know what every-day Joe America thinks and feels, check out some of his music. True lyrics and music by a true man of the blues. Most of our pop music is really just an excuse to put some lyrics to dance music, and I see the likes of Britney Spears and N'Sync as nothing more than glorified dancers with microphones.

Anyway, I hope someday more people will see through the hype and understand "true" talent when they see or hear it. I was lucky enough to be exposed to the Cleveland Orchestra at a young age, and though I tried not to enjoy myself, eventually the ability of the musicians and their performance won me over to the extent that I began to tell my friends around me to quit goofing off!

Inspiration and well-being to you all,

-j5265 (Jim)

Thanks for the reply. I hope all is well with you and everyone else on the board!
The compliment on my poetry is most appreciated. Did you by chance get to read it?
Indeed, the beginning would seem to be the place to start! :)
I will make it a point to read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". I'm always up for a good laugh! I think I may go with some other theme than blowing up a planet, though. It's been done so many times... :)
It's amazing how many of my American brethren do not grasp the double-negative in Pink Floyd's most popular US song.
I hope you enjoy the quality of Queensryche's music, albeit a bit more guitar-driven than you may be used to!
Sorry you couldn't get into my web site. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'll see if I can correct it. Perhaps I'll start one of these groups and post some of my content here!

Thanks again!.
